Many organisations now include braille on their business cards to show they are conscious of the need to be inclusive of people who are blind or have low vision. This service is used regularly, particularly by all levels of government and by organisations dealing with people with disabilities.

Specifications

To enable us to Braille emboss directly onto business cards, the cards should be supplied to us printed and uncut on a sheet no bigger than A4. The business card should be set at the standard size of 90mm x 55mm and usually fit 8 up on an A4 sheet, in portrait layout. To ensure there is enough room for the Braille, we prefer that there is no raised or embossed text on the cards. A small embossed logo may be okay, but please send us your electronic artwork to check this prior to printing. Business cards with a solid dark background cannot be embossed.

The card stock has to be matte, at a weight preferably no heavier than 250gsm. We recommend 235gsm tablex systems board - all our Vision Australia cards are produced on this stock as it holds the Braille well.

The average card holds 4 Braille lines containing 14 cells per line, which usually allows for the person's name & telephone number. We can emboss the cards double sided on a case by case basis.

Please send overs (5% of total quantity) to allow for set up and wastage. The cards will have to be returned to the printer to trim to the finished size. Please allow 10 working days for braille production.

If you have more than one card name for embossing, we suggest the different names are set all on the one sheet to save on mastering costs.

Although every effort will be made to accommodate variations in card weight, finish and thickness, Vision Australia will not be responsible for any costs associated with re-printing or re-embossing new sheets if the card stock did not meet our specifications as above and has jammed in the machine. If you are not sure if your cards are suitable to emboss, we are happy to have a look at a sample and do a trial run. Pricing as of 1 July 2017 (excluding GST):

Mastering:

$75 set up cost per sheet

Duplication:

$2.00 per uncut sheet for cards that meet our specifications listed above $3.80 per uncut sheet for cards that require manual feeding into the embosser due to non-spec stock. Due to the high level of manual labour required to individually feed non-spec cards through the embosser, you will be charged for all sheets that we attempt to emboss. If you are concerned about the weight or finish of your cards, we recommend you send us a sample sheet before printing.
