Personalised low vision support

At Vision Australia, we understand that the beginning of any vision loss journey can feel overwhelming and isolating at times.

Our Know Your Vision clinics exist to help people experiencing vision loss to better understand their condition, and to learn what support services are available to them.

As everyone’s experience with vision loss is unique, our Know Your Vision clinics are tailored to each individual, but the goal is always the same: to understand what is important to each client, and to help them find what they need to continue living their lives to the fullest.

Our appointments at our Know Your Vision clinics last between 90 minutes and two hours, so our team of vision loss experts can go a step further than a regular optometry or vision specialist appointment. We are here to provide expert assistance, and advice when glasses are no longer enough.

What to expect at a Know Your Vision clinic

At your Know Your Vision clinic session, you will receive individualised support from an occupational therapist and an optometrist or orthoptist.

  • Your session will begin with a thorough check of your vision to help you better understand your eye condition.
  • Our vision loss experts will discuss simple and practical strategies with you to help you maximise your remaining vision so you can continue to do the things you love.
  • You will have the chance to explore our extensive range of low vision devices and optical aids, from simple and affordable items (like magnifiers and lighting tools) to more specialised products.
  • You can participate in live demonstrations with assistive technology that can enhance day-to-day living.
  • You will also have the chance to discuss your funding options.

At the end of each appointment, our goal is for our clients to feel reassured and supported, with a new host of tools, resources and knowledge in their belt to help them manage their vision loss.

How much does it cost?

Vision Australia’s Know Your Vision clinic are funded through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), which can also provide an equipment funding subsidy.

The cost of a Know Your Vision clinic can also be covered by Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) funding.

If you can’t access CHSP or DVA funding, you can chat to our team about other options. This could be as simple as paying a fee for service or us pointing you towards more appropriate funding schemes.
