Warrnambool residents will soon have the opportunity to experience the cutting edge in assistive technology for those who are blind or have low vision at the upcoming Vision Australia clinic open day.

The free event on Tuesday, 10 December at Vision Australia’s new site at 174 Koroit Street, Warrnambool from 10am to 3pm will showcase some of the latest in assistive technology, including the new OrCam My Eye 2.0 and the Reveal 16i.

The OrCam is a wearable wireless smart camera that is mounted onto the user’s glasses and instantly reads printed text aloud and can recognise faces, products, and money notes in real time.

The Reveal 16i is a foldable, powerful digital magnifier that enables reading of documents, textbooks and newspapers as well as assists with writing for people with low vision.

Vision Australia regional client services manager, Yvette Gollmer, said the open day is all about bringing the community together and ensuring the region’s blind and low vision community know where to turn to for support.

“We provide a range of specialist services to those in the region to adapt to vision loss or make the most of the sight they have. This includes our orthoptist, occupational therapist, assistive technology specialist, orientation and mobility specialist as well as a paediatric occupational therapist,” Yvette said.

“We can also support people to access other services Vision Australia offers, such as the Vision Australia Library and Seeing Eye Dogs, as well as provide expert advice on how people can make the most of funding opportunities such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme or My Aged Care.”

The open day is free, but registrations are essential. To RSVP, email Warrnambool@visionaustralia.org or call 03 5560 2300.

Vision Australia runs fortnightly low vision clinics at the Koroit Street location, allowing Warrnambool’s blind and low vision community to access vision assessments and other specialist support services.
