A major event of the Australian Braille Authority every year is the National Braille Music Camp.
Every year, braille readers from across Australia head to the New South Wales’ Southern Highlands for week where they can learn, improve, share, transcribe and teach braille music.
This week Talking Vision is hosted by camp leader, musician and braille music teacher Jordie Howell.
On this special episode, Jordie chats with violinist Karmae and trumpeter Sydney about the camp and shares some of the amazing music created during the 2018 camp.
For nine year-old Kamae it was an opportunity for her to learn from teachers who are blind themselves, something she described as “fun and exciting.”
For Sydney, this year was his second music camp and the experience for him is as much about connecting with people who have similar lived experiences to him as it is about improving his music skills.
“One of the main reasons I really love coming to these camps is that I get to meet so many people who have succeeded in life and have similar interests and hobbies,” Sydney said.
“For someone who live in North Queensland it's great opportunity to meet people from all around Australia and meet people who can help you grow into an adult,” he said
