Older people across Australia have become more familiar with technology this week thanks to series of free works shops and events run by Vision Australia.
As part of Get On Line Week, older Australians have been encouraged this week to #Try1Thing relating to the internet or technology, which they have been able to do under the guidance of Vision Australia staff.
Events across sites in NSW, Queensland and Victoria have given participants the chance to learn about technologies and resources targeted at people with vision loss, such as the Vision Australia Library, as well as how to make the most out of everyday devices like their iPhone, Google Home or Amazon Alexa.
At Vision Australia’s new Sunshine office in Victoria, around 25 people came along to learn more about the internet and how to use it to remain better connected.
In Gosford, attendees were given some expert advice on navigating online audio books and online access to the Vision Australia Library using their own own devices.
VA Assistive Technology Specialist Andreas Buchmueller said the session was a success.
“The participation was phenomenal. We had many more attendees than initially expected. The casual atmosphere seamed to create a comfortable space for people to speak up and ask questions,” Andreas said.
“People brought in their own devices and got specific questions answered and/or received support with setting up their devices for VA Library access,” he said
Participants felt the same way, with feedback like “it helps being introduced to the Vision Australia Online Library in person as I would not know where to start” and “I can imagine more people would benefit from a session like this to get them start” being received.
In Albury, participants learned how to use a Google Home to find a recipe which they then cooked using equipment like a talking microwave. The session was described as “fun” and “informative”, with one participant hoping for something similar in the future so they can take a crack at making pancakes.
At our Epping office, a large group of people learned a few handy lessons about their iPads and what the devices are capable of. VAT ATS Cecilia gave a demonstration and followed that up with a Q&A session.
“It was eye opening to learn how much technology can help me in everyday life,” on participant said, while another remarked “I found it very enjoyable to learn about the iPad and I didn’t know how much was available on it. I’m thinking about getting an iPad now.”
At Vision Australia’s Warragul and Sale office, Get Online Week participants were given the chance to learn more about what their iPhones and iPads can do, as well as learn about specialist devices like the OrCam MyEye.
